FIVE POEMS FROM ‘TO THE SOUTH OF THINGS – A SUD DELLE COSE – Part II, by Pasqualino Bongiovanni
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

THE ABSENT-MINDED MAN

Again tonight,

stretched out on the bed,

the absent-minded man

thinks about the light

outside in the garden,

which he does not remember

having ever switched off.

And although drunk,

he doesn’t really seem so.

He turns the lamp back on

puts on his glasses

and goes downstairs.

The light outside

which shines alone

on the countryside

is the full moon.

And, if I think about it,

who knows how many times,

mechanically,

I switch my life on

and then switch it back off,

and then I don’t understand

if it’s off or on,

if it’s only the moon.

L’UOMO DISTRATTO

Di nuovo stanotte,

disteso nel letto,

l’uomo distratto

ripensa alla luce

là fuori in giardino

che lui non ricorda

d’aver spento mai.

Eppure ubriaco

non sembra davvero.

Riaccende la lampada

inforca gli occhiali

e scende le scale.

La luce che fuori

da sola risplende

lì sulla campagna

è la luna piena.

Ed io, se ci penso,

chissà quante volte

meccanicamente

accendo la vita

e dopo la spengo

e poi non capisco

se è spenta o se è accesa,

se è solo la luna.

THE SHADOW

As a child,

in the golden, dim evenings,

every shadow in the alleys

was a stray dog,

the black wolf,

the demon cat.

I would have liked,

then,

neither a sword

nor sturdy armor,

but

a bigger shadow,

more powerful than those,

with shoulders

broad and calm,

a short, quick

stride,

and a voice

both stern and wise.

I would have liked

a shadow like that

by my side

or a little behind me.

Now,

at thirty,

I still look around

for that shadow,

and if I should see it,

if I sensed it,

even

for only

a moment,

it would suffice,

and I wouldn’t be afraid any more.

L’OMBRA

Da bambino,

nelle sere ingiallite e fioche,

ogni ombra dei vicoli

era un cane randagio,

il lupo nero,

il gatto mammone.

Avrei voluto,

allora,

non

una

spada

o una robusta armatura,

ma

un’ombra

più grande

e più forte di quelle,

con spalle larghe

e calme,

dal passo lento

e breve,

e dalla voce più severa

e saggia.

Un’ombra così,

avrei

voluto

a lato,

o poco più dietro.

Oggi,

a trent’anni,

quell’ombra

mi volto

ancora

a cercarla,

e se la vedessi,

se la sentissi

anche

solo

per

un

attimo,

basterebbe,

e non temerei più.

BROTHERHOOD

It is awfully sad

to live

sitting

on the

crumpled up page

of one’s own

solitude.

Perhaps

it would be

wiser

to reach out

and,

in an embrace,

recline

each

on the heart

of the other,

as do,

in the wind,

the stalks of wheat.

FRATERNITÀ

È assai triste

vivere

seduti

sulla pagina

sgualcita

della propria

solitudine.

Più saggio

sarebbe

forse

tendersi la mano

e

in un abbraccio

adagiarsi

l’uno

sul cuore

dell’altro,

come fanno

al vento

le spighe

del grano.

RESISTANCE

(For Mario Rigoni Stern)

In order to resist

one need not

always

be

a stone in the fist

a cliff in the storm

a rock in the wind.

One may,

perhaps with more valor,

resist pliantly,

as the primrose to the frost.

RESISTERE

(A Mario Rigoni Stern)

Per resistere

non sempre

è necessario

essere

pietra nel pugno

scoglio in tempesta

roccia nel vento.

Si può,

forse con più coraggio,

resistere docili

come primula al gelo.

WOMEN’S HANDS

They were bruised and cold,

the women’s hands,

bent from washing along the river

or in the cement basins

of the Muraglione[1].

Nails worn down

from picking olives

among the dry leaves

and stone chippings,

from scraping the soil

(like chickens and dogs)

to dig up potatoes

or in search of chicory and sprouts

along the paths.

They were hands of women

lighting the ovens,

kneading

the flour with water

and working in the salt.

Hands that pull the leaves from the vines

like pages of the calendar

of an entire year

torn out bitterly.

Patient hands

that knit up life,

hands that work

the loom.

Strong hands

pummeling the bread,

the hard black bread,

in the mortar.

Hands made blue

dissolving the corrosion in the well,

the rocklike verdigris,

inky hands

submerged in the must

feeling for small stems

to remove.

Hands that carry

children to sleep,

tender, gentle

hands that cherish,

clasped and silent

in the cold nights

under the covers,

hands that pray.

They were

(and they still are)

the hands of many women:

caring, calm hands

which surely are

never grazed

by a lover’s lips,

by an amorous kiss

or even a caress.

MANI DI DONNE

Erano livide e fredde

le mani delle donne

curvate a lavare lungo il fiume

o alle vasche di cemento

al Muraglione.

Unghie consumate

a raccogliere olive

tra foglie secche

e pietre d’arenai,

a raschiare la terra

(come galline e cani)

per scovare patate

o in cerca di cicoria e talli

lungo i sentieri.

Erano mani di donne

a infuocare i forni,

a impastare

la farina con l’acqua

e la fatica col sale.

Mani a sfogliare vigne

come pagine di calendario

e di un anno intero

da strappare amaro.

Mani pazienti

a rammendare la vita,

mani a tessere

dentro al telaio.

Mani forti

ad ammaccare il pane,

il pane duro e nero

dentro al mortaio.

Mani azzurre

a sciogliere al pozzo

la pietra del verderame,

mani d’inchiostro

immerse nel mosto

in cerca di raspi

da ripulire.

Mani bambine

che portano il sonno

tenere e dolci

mani a cullare,

giunte e silenti

nelle notti fredde

sotto le coperte

mani a pregare.

Erano queste

(e lo sono ancora)

le mani di molte donne:

mani amorevoli e calme

che pure non vennero

sfiorate mai

da due labbra d’amante,

da un bacio galante

o una carezza appena.

From “A sud delle cose”

[1] Neighborhood in the historical part of Lamezia Terme (Calabria), characterized by high and wide stone walls which embank the Cantagalli river crossing the town. In this place there were washtubs where women washed clothes by hand.
