HAIKU

by Shokan Tadashi KONDO, Italian translation by Walter Valeri.

a temple

on the ridge

unable to hear the frog

un tempio

sulla vetta

incapace di sentire la rana

the thin moon

melts in the rising sun

such a short night

pallida la luna

si dissolve nel sole

una notte così breve

a rice-planting girl

raises her head

like a heron

una mondina

alza la testa

come un airone

the moon

after the typhoon

so clear

la luna

dopo il tifone

così limpida

a storm of petals

on the ground turning

into a galactic vortex

una tempesta di petali

sul suolo s’invola

in un vortice galattico

a big bridge

shakes with a bang

from fireworks

un ponte massiccio

trema al bang

dei fuochi d’artificio

let’s break the ice

in the stone washbasin

narcissuses in bloom

rompiamo il ghiaccio

al lavatoio di pietra

narcisi in fiore

let me eat the snow

to clear a hangover

a frozen crow

lasciami mangiare la neve

per pulire la sbornia

un corvo gelato

becoming like spring

the mud getting dry

on the rugger shoes

come fosse primavera

il fango si secca

sulle scarpe da rugby

the intercourse is over

between heaven, earth, and men

the scattering petals

la tregua è finita

fra cielo, terra e uomini

i petali dispersi

a  Basho statue

bowing to the first snow

on Mt. Fuji

una statua di Basho

s’inchina alla prima neve

sul Monte Fuji

scent of plum blossoms

by my sweetheart’s window

the second-day moon

profumo di bocciòli del prugno

dalla finestra dell’amata

il secondo giorno di luna

<change of address after retirement>

here again

a dream of a traveler

the summer frost

<cambio d’indirizzo dopo la pensione>

ritorna

il sogno del viaggiatore

chiaro di luna fra le zolle

(nota: the summer frost è il chiaro di luna sulla terra appena arata)

KONDO Tadashi Shokan is a professor emeritus at Seikei University. He is author of several essays exploring poetics: “Principles of Universal Haiku Grammar” on the stylistics & poetics common to all languages; “World Renku (linked poetry)” on international semiotic perspectives; and “Link and Shift” on the guiding principles for renku writing. He started Renku Performance, exploring the potentials of linked verse as a multi-media arts fusion. He is also a member of the Renku Association; founder & coordinator of the United Nations of Renku; and the head of the Isehara Renku Society.
