Overturning planes in the labyrinth – Four poems by Rita Degli Esposti
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In order to usher in 2024 in the sign solidarity through translation, on January 1, 2024 The Dreaming Machine is honored to host Moulinath Goswami’s Bengali translation of the two Ukrainian poets Daryna Gladun and Ella Yevtushenko, a peek into a larger translation project involving a number of Ukrainian poets to be translated into Bengali. The cover image is from a mixed media project featuring Ukrainian forest and city landscape that was part of the February 2023 Ukrainian contemporary art exhibit in Padua, Italy.

Daryna Gladun

Bengali translation from the English by Moulinath Goswami

১

midsummer landscape

1.

dry air leaves bitterness on the surface of my lungs

2.

the bitterness travels by arteries and capillaries to every cell of my body

3.

every cell of my body stores the scent of the burnt wood

4.

the sound of stomping hooves approaches
the scream of every creature that is capable of screaming approaches
collective animal fear approaches
rapidly

a head of a dead deer passes by
a tail of a red cardinal passes by
a collective body of fear covered in feathers and wool passes by
undistinguishable
irreversible

5.

the burnt wood smells like me
sounds like me
tastes like me
feels like me
has the form of me
comes from distant territories like me
in fact here we stand together as one in the hot dry air observing grass and bushes
and trees turn black
gradually

6.

damp stones under my feet
dried out

7.

a flock of cardinals
meltedin the scarlet sky

8.

my hair weaved into the rusty grass at the bank of Connecticut river

9.

on September 28, 2022 in Uppsala, Sweden
a poet from Belarus Kristina Bandurina asking
if I will be able to write poems of something besides the war once the war is over
I replied sure
I replied look at parts 1-5 of this poem
I replied
Yes?
Kristina smiled
I am planting her smile into a wounded soil at the bank of Connecticut river
to resist

to resist

I hope

the wolf hour

Bengali translation from the English by Moulinath Goswami

১

the wolf hour

1

the hour between 3 am and 4 am
is called ‘the wolf hour’ in Sweden
when it is too late to fall asleep
but too early to get up
so, they stay in bed listening
to (their inner) wolves
this is how Ullmar explained it

the curfew in Kyiv is
from 8 pm till 7 am
the curfew in Kherson is
from 8 pm till 6 am
the curfew in Kharkiv is
from 4 pm till 6 am
when it is too late to die
but too early to live
so we stay in bed guessing
what are these sounds: they bombing us or
we taking down their missiles
but no one can ever explain any of this

2

in 35 years in Chornobyl Exclusion Zone
the population of wolves has increased
now a bear has been spotted here
the most dangerous of all large predators
it came here from the territory of Belarus
this is how Serhiy Hashchak, a researcher
of the fauna in the exclusion zone, explained it

this spring great fires are expected here
but the nature is able to restore itself
announced Mr. Hashchak
the pictures from camera traps show
how the fire is roaring and local inhabitants are fleeing to the west
but in a month green grass will be sprouting here
and young deer and moose will be grazing

but the time has not come yet it is still cold
the wolves gather in large packs for hunting
at the wolf hour
they will take on their thermal cameras
strong and ardent, they will go and you know what
together they will hunt down the bear
and this will be very easy to explain
